CenterStage Theatre Company's Production of 'Rent'

  • CenterStage Theatre Company (map)

Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provide the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical. This is theatre at its best – exuberant, passionate, and joyous. *Patrons should note that RENT contains very mature content (strong PG-13).

'In the Trenches' at 54 Below

Join two bleary-eyed young parents as they trudge through the trenches and discover their post-baby identities.  In an evening of new-parent Greatest Hits, a foul-mouthed toddler zeroes in on “The Most Dangerous Thing In The Room,” tap dancing towards bleach, knives, and tide pods; a chronically-overlooked younger sibling sings the “Second Child Blues”; a mom trio celebrates yoga pants in an R&B love song to the “official mom uniform”; Dad discovers he’s not the “ice-cream and movie-night cool parent” but rather the “do your homework real parent” amid a kiddo sugar-crash; and Mom retrieves a sticky, hair-covered pacifier from the floor of a LaGuardia bathroom while her baby screams bloody murder and her flight boards without her.

Sold-out audiences have called this “potty-mouthed parent party” “relatable,” “hilarious,” “laugh-til-you-cry,” and “heartwarming.” The score features a wide array of musical styles, from doo-wop to hip hop, Gilbert and Sullivan patter to 80’s rock, Motown to musical theater, and more, “all delivered with power and finesse.” Similar to I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, The Book of Mormon, and Avenue Q, the show contains adult language and humor and is a perfect date night or moms’ night out.

Gamelan Tunas Mekar presents Mountain Offerings

Gamelan Tunas Mekar presents Mountain Offerings, an evening performance of new and traditional music and dance that provides a glimpse into a Balinese temple ceremony. Uniting Colorado and Bali through their mountainous landscapes, Tunas Mekar offers a cross-cultural experience of the dynamic relationship of spirituality in the expressive arts. Through this performance we highlight ceremonies in Bali which seek to offer people moments of peace in times of cacophonous social interactions.

This performance features three Balinese orchestras, including Gamelan Semara Dana and Gamelan Angklung, with the ensemble performing traditional works and premiering new compositions by I Putu Tangkas Adi Hiranmayena, I Made Tangkas Ade Wijaya, and a collective work for Gamelan Baleganjur composed by Gamelan Tunas Mekar. Collectively these pieces embody cosmological relationships to place through traditional practices of Balinese artistic expression. Separately these pieces represent: processional music for life-cycle ceremonies; sitting music for temple preparations; music depicting the nature of a living tradition, rooted in the earth and history; a traditional welcome dance; a dance depicting the bird of paradise from Irian Jaya; a benevolent protector of community; and a dance requiring great versatility as the performer dances, sings and plays fluidly amid the ensemble.

Gamelan Tunas Mekar at the Paradise Theater

Based in Denver, Colorado, USA, Gamelan Tunas Mekar is a community ensemble under the direction of Balinese composer and Artist-in-Residence I Made Lasmawan. Their mission is to learn and perform the traditional and new music of Bali, Indonesia and offer a cultural exchange about the unique island of Bali. Gamelan is a primarily percussive music, literally meaning “to hammer.” Bronze-keyed instruments and tuned gongs are struck with various wooden and padded mallets in interlocking flurries of sound. Supplemented by double-headed drums and bamboo flutes, the shimmering sound of gamelan accompany everything from secular dances to shadow plays to the most sacred temple ceremonies. Modeled after typical village groups found throughout Bali, and learning by traditional methods, this community ensemble provides American audiences the rare opportunity to experience one of the world’s most beautiful and sophisticated performing arts.

“Hello world” is the “testing, testing, 1,2,3” of the internet age: it’s the first thing a budding programmer learns to code, the friendly filler text on a newly-launched blog, the first scratch on a digital blank slate. We’ve commissioned new works that explore this concept in music: confronted by empty space, what are the first utterances a creator speaks into the void, and what takes shape from these initial, tentative signals?
